SOVEREIGN CLOUD & LINUX14 MIN READAUTHORED BY GENE SALVATORE

# Inside GreenTree’s High-Availability Cloud Stack. Multi-Node NVMe Linux, Encrypted WireGuard Mesh, Authoritative 60-Second DNS & Standby Database Failback.

How we engineered a private, multi-node active/standby Linux cloud on dedicated NVMe hardware across geographically separated North American data centers—combining isolated Docker containers, a kernel-level encrypted mesh network, multi-node authoritative DNS, writable standby PostgreSQL 16 failback merge, S3 object storage, and an 8-point automated security gate.

Many commercial businesses face a tradeoff between single-server shared hosting—where hardware maintenance takes sites offline—and usage-metered serverless platforms where per-deploy credits and hourly database meters make monthly budgeting harder to predict. Here is what runs under the hood of our flat-rate **$99/mo** and **$199/mo** cloud plans, and how 29+ years of building our own infrastructure shaped every layer.

EXECUTIVE THESIS // ARCHITECTURAL BRIEF

## Why We Wrote This Playbook—And What It Means for Your Next Platform

Commercial organizations choosing where to host a business website or custom web application typically weigh two common models: single-server shared hosting or usage-metered cloud platforms. At GreenTree Hosting, we engineered a third option for our new high-availability platform: a private, multi-node Linux cloud built on dedicated NVMe hardware across geographically separated North American data centers. Every application on the new platform runs inside an isolated container behind an automated TLS 1.3 edge proxy, linked by an encrypted private mesh network, resolved by our own multi-node authoritative DNS network, and backed by writable standby PostgreSQL 16 persistence that saves and merges new form submissions back to the primary database upon failback.

KEY TAKEAWAYS (4 CORE POINTS)

TAKEAWAY 01

Every site on our new high-availability platform runs in its own isolated Docker container on enterprise Ubuntu 24.04 LTS NVMe servers—never sharing a global PHP or Node runtime process with other applications.

TAKEAWAY 02

All compute, standby, database, and storage nodes communicate over an encrypted private mesh backplane, while internal administration consoles are restricted behind our private VPN perimeter and IP allowlists (returning HTTP 403 Forbidden to the public internet).

TAKEAWAY 03

Our authoritative BIND DNS network spans two independent cloud providers and autonomous systems (OVHcloud AS16276 and DigitalOcean AS14061) in the US East and US West regions, serving short cache times on high-availability zones so traffic can shift quickly during maintenance or failover.

TAKEAWAY 04

Both primary and warm-standby nodes run writable PostgreSQL 16 database engines: if a visitor submits a contact form or quote request while the warm standby is active, the submission is saved to the standby database, emailed out immediately, and merged back into the primary database on failback.

PART 01 // COMPARING THREE HOSTING ARCHITECTURES

## 1. Why We Engineered a Multi-Node High-Availability Cloud Instead of Using Single-Server Shared Hosting or Metered Serverless

When a business launches or modernizes a website or web application, the underlying hosting usually falls into one of two categories—each built around different priorities:

- **Single-Server Shared Hosting:** Traditional shared hosting places multiple websites onto one machine and a shared runtime process to keep entry costs low. That works well for basic hobby or brochure sites, but if another site on the machine spikes CPU or the server needs hardware maintenance, every site on that box is affected until the machine comes back online.
- **Usage-Metered Cloud Platforms:** Modern serverless platforms (such as Vercel, Netlify, and Supabase) separate compute from single machines, but bill around usage meters—counting production deploys, bandwidth, team seats, or hourly database compute (see **[Why Your Website Bill Should Not Depend on How Often It Is Used](https://www.greentreehosting.com/library/why-your-website-bill-should-not-depend-on-how-often-it-is-used)**).

At GreenTree, we have built and operated our own physical racks, routing cores, Linux clusters, and authoritative DNS networks for 29+ years. For clients who want multi-server redundancy without variable monthly usage bills, we engineered the **GreenTree High-Availability Cloud**: a multi-node active/standby Linux platform running on dedicated NVMe hardware across geographically separated North American data centers for a flat monthly rate (**$99/mo Core Cloud** or **$199/mo Core Cloud + Management**). While we never charge per-deploy or hourly database wake-up fees, you cannot sign up for a $99/mo base plan and consume all the server’s resources—we actively monitor CPU, memory, storage, database load, and bandwidth across every container and work with any site using a disproportionate share to upgrade to an appropriate plan (**$299+/mo Dedicated Environment** or **$599+/mo Cluster**).

| Architectural Layer | Single-Server Shared Hosting | Usage-Metered Serverless Cloud | GreenTree High-Availability NVMe Cloud |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Compute & Runtime Isolation | Shared global runtime process on a single server | Ephemeral serverless functions (can cold-start after idle periods) | Dedicated Ubuntu 24.04 LTS NVMe nodes + isolated per-site Docker containers |
| Database Persistence & Failover | Single shared MySQL instance on the same machine | Metered hourly cloud DB (or pauses when idle on entry tiers) | Isolated 24/7 PostgreSQL 16 + writable warm-standby & automated failback merge |
| Authoritative DNS & Cache TTL | Standard registrar DNS with 1–24 hour (3,600s–86,400s) cache times | Platform edge DNS tied to account tier | Multi-node authoritative BIND DNS across US East & US West ASNs |
| Internal Admin & Backplane Security | Public `/wp-admin` or control panel login URLs on the open web | Public cloud dashboard protected by account OAuth / 2FA | Encrypted private mesh backplane + restricted admin perimeter (HTTP 403 to public) |
| Object Storage & Backups | Local disk backups typically stored on the same server | Metered per-GB storage + per-GB egress bandwidth charges | S3-compatible SeaweedFS object storage cluster + automated nightly off-node backups ($0 egress) |
| Monthly Cost Structure | Low base rate; extra fees for SSL, PHP extensions, or add-ons | Scales with deploys, bandwidth, seats & database compute hours | Flat $99/mo Core Cloud or $199/mo Managed (includes 1 hr/mo human updates + Client Portal) |

PART 02 // MULTI-NODE NVME COMPUTE & ENCRYPTED MESH

## 2. Dedicated Ubuntu 24.04 LTS NVMe Compute, Isolated Containers & Our Encrypted Private Mesh

Every site on our new high-availability platform runs on enterprise **Ubuntu 24.04 LTS** compute nodes equipped with high-frequency multi-core processors and local enterprise NVMe solid-state storage. Instead of placing multiple customer sites in a shared directory tree, each application and API on this platform runs inside its own **isolated Docker container** with dedicated CPU and memory limits behind an automated TLS 1.3 edge proxy.

Because each workload is containerized at the operating-system level, our new platform natively runs our full-stack **React 19 + TypeScript + Node.js** applications, pre-rendered static builds, custom **PHP 8.3 / Apache** workloads, and containerized **WordPress** deployments—while we also continue to support our established Linux and customer-managed hosting environments across our broader fleet.

Underneath the public TLS edge, our compute nodes, standby server, database engines, and object storage volumes communicate over a **kernel-level encrypted WireGuard private mesh**. Just as importantly, our internal orchestration consoles and fleet administration tools are locked behind that private VPN perimeter and strict IP allowlists. When an unauthenticated scanner or bot on the public internet requests our internal command domain, the edge immediately returns **`HTTP 403 Forbidden`** rather than exposing a login page.

PART 03 // AUTHORITATIVE DNS, WARM-STANDBY FAILOVER & STANDBY DATABASE MERGE

## 3. Multi-Node Authoritative DNS & How We Handle Form Submissions During a Warm-Standby Failover

Running a second server is only half of a high-availability setup. For a warm-standby pair to work smoothly in practice, two operational details matter most:

- **1. Fast Authoritative DNS Propagation Across Geographically Separated Nameservers:** If a domain’s `A` records carry a 3,600-second (1-hour) or 86,400-second (24-hour) cache time, switching traffic to a standby server leaves many visitors cached on the old IP address for an hour or more. GreenTree operates our own **multi-node authoritative BIND DNS network** across two independent cloud providers and autonomous systems (OVHcloud AS16276 and DigitalOcean AS14061) in the US East (Virginia & New York) and US West (California) regions, allowing us to serve short, 60-second cache times on high-availability zones during planned maintenance or failover.

- **2. Automated 5-Minute Database Sync & Saving Form Submissions While the Warm Standby Is Active:** In a basic standby setup, the secondary database is often read-only (which causes contact forms and quote requests to return an error during failover) or writes land in a temporary copy that gets overwritten when traffic returns to the primary server.

On our new platform, **both the primary node (in Beauharnois, Canada) and the warm-standby node (in Hillsboro, Oregon) run writable PostgreSQL 16 database engines** connected over our private mesh with an **automated 5-minute synchronization cadence**, alongside distributed SeaweedFS S3 object storage, MariaDB 11.4 LTS, and our third WireGuard mesh voter (`mx.greentreemail.com` in Virginia)—all protected by OVHcloud hardware Edge Network Firewalls. When a visitor submits a contact form, project scope, or Visual Pin Board note on a site using our randomized string submission IDs (`sub-<timestamp>-<random>`) while the warm-standby server is active, the submission is saved immediately to the standby PostgreSQL 16 database (`HTTP 200 OK`, `dbPersisted: true`) and emailed out via our SmarterMail SMTP relay. Our automated 5-minute sync and failback reconciliation job then merges newly inserted standby rows back into the primary PostgreSQL 16 database (`ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING`) so form submissions recorded during failover are carried back to the primary node.

We also state plainly what has been live-drilled today versus what is modeled next: on October 25, 2026, we executed a planned live reboot failover and failback drill on our primary compute node in Beauharnois, moving authoritative DNS to our warm-standby node ahead of the reboot. During the drill, two zones still carrying a legacy 10.6-hour (38,400s) TTL (`greentreehosting.com` and `cfelectricalservice.com`) experienced a brief ~15 to 18 second interruption on cached resolvers before we standardized all high-availability zones to a 60-second TTL, while writable standby database persistence and post-reboot failback worked as designed and all 78 permanent containers (52 application containers + 26 database & service containers) came back up automatically in 21 seconds. You can explore every node, link, and failure scenario interactively in our **[Live Architecture & Failover Simulator](https://www.greentreehosting.com/architecture/)**.

PART 04 // S3 OBJECT STORAGE, DUAL-ENGINE DATABASES & OUR 8-POINT SECURITY GATE

## 4. S3-Compatible Object Storage (SeaweedFS), Dual-Engine Databases & Our Mandatory 8-Point Security Gate

Modern web applications require fast media delivery, relational data integrity, and consistent perimeter defense:

- **High-Speed S3-Compatible Object Storage (SeaweedFS):** Instead of bloating application containers with large media libraries or paying cloud egress fees every time a visitor downloads a PDF specification or high-resolution photo gallery, GreenTree operates our own distributed, S3-compatible object storage cluster powered by **SeaweedFS**. It serves high-resolution media, architectural assets, and automated nightly off-node backups with zero third-party egress charges.
- **Dual-Engine Database Persistence (PostgreSQL 16 + MariaDB 11.4 LTS):** Every modern React/Node application and client portal on the new platform gets its own isolated **PostgreSQL 16** database container (with warm-standby replication), while relational PHP and content management workloads run on **MariaDB 11.4 LTS**—both backed up nightly to off-node storage.
- **Mandatory 8-Point Automated Security Gate (`STD-SEC-GATE`) & 7-Layer Form Shield:** Before any new client application goes live—and on a recurring nightly schedule—our automated negative-testing suite verifies strict `DIST_DIR` static file isolation, edge interception of dotfile and scanner probes (`.env`, `.git`, `.sql`, `wp-config.php`), timing-safe authentication, brute-force rate limiting, automated Let’s Encrypt TLS 1.3 + HSTS headers, and our 7-layer form shield.
- **External Telemetry & HijackRadar Cyber Shield:** Sites on our high-availability platform are monitored from outside the server via **`LogBot.app`**, **`DNSBot.app`**, our public telemetry status hub (**`https://status.greentreehosting.net`**), and complimentary **`HijackRadar.com`** protection (authoritative NS delegation checks, RDAP registrar expiry early warning, SPF/DMARC mail defense, and RBL reputation monitoring).

PART 05 // 28 YEARS OF REFUSING SLOW PIPES

## 5. From Roof Satellite & a Residential T1 Over POTS in Sudbury, MA to 800 Feet of Trenched Gigabit Fiber in Southbury, CT

If our focus on redundant DNS, private mesh backplanes, and dedicated NVMe hardware sounds personal, that is because it comes from 29+ years of refusing to let slow or fragile connectivity stand between us and our clients’ servers.

Back in 1996–1998 in **Warwick, Rhode Island**, when real estate agents were driving over in person to drop off manila folders and envelopes of printed 35mm house photos right into our mailbox for us to scan on our Hewlett-Packard flatbed scanner for `RILiving.com`, we were among the very first **Cox Cable** broadband customers in Rhode Island, so early that the installation took days and a small army of Cox trucks and technicians to provision.

A few years later, in the early 2000s, when we moved from Warwick to **Sudbury, Massachusetts** (where we helped build Adgrafix and operated our regional data center racks), we lived in **three different homes across Sudbury**—and each house had its own connectivity chapter: at **House 1**, where there was no cable on the road, we had **satellite internet installed on the roof**; at **House 2**, Gene had a **dedicated commercial T1 line wired in over POTS (copper twisted-pair telephone lines)** directly into our residential house so we would have an always-on, business-grade pipe; and at **House 3**, we finally had **cable internet**.

When we moved to **Southbury, Connecticut in 2007** and launched GreenTree Hosting, LLC, we ran on `50/8 Mbps` cable internet until commercial fiber finally reached our road two years ago—where we had **commercial fiber trenched about 800 feet across the yard** right into our headquarters for **symmetric Gigabit fiber (`1,000/1,000 Mbps`)**. Whether it was a residential T1 over POTS in Sudbury or 800 feet of trenched Gigabit fiber and a multi-node Linux cloud today, our rule has never changed: own the stack, build for resilience, and give business owners infrastructure they can count on.

TECHNICAL DUE DILIGENCE // FAQ

## Frequently Asked Architectural Questions

### What happens if a visitor submits a contact or quote form while your warm-standby server is active?

Unlike read-only standby setups where forms fail during maintenance or failover, both our primary and warm-standby servers run writable PostgreSQL 16 databases alongside our SmarterMail SMTP relay. New form submissions on our platform (which use unique timestamp-plus-random string IDs) are saved immediately to the standby PostgreSQL 16 database, emailed out right away, and merged back into the primary PostgreSQL database by our automated failback reconciliation job.

### Why does GreenTree use 60-second DNS cache times on high-availability zones instead of a 1-hour (3,600s) TTL?

When a domain uses a 3,600-second (1-hour) or 86,400-second (24-hour) DNS cache time, switching traffic to a warm-standby server leaves many visitors cached on the old IP address for an hour or more. By operating our own multi-node authoritative BIND DNS network across separate US East and US West cloud backbones and configuring 60-second TTLs on high-availability zones, planned maintenance and failover transitions propagate in roughly a minute.

### Is failover between your primary and standby servers manual or automatic today?

Today, our second Ubuntu 24.04 LTS NVMe server runs live as a warm standby with synchronized containers, writable PostgreSQL 16 persistence, automated standby-to-primary database row merge for new form submissions, and live-tested manual failover across our authoritative DNS network. Fully automated sentinel failover is the final step now being completed on our high-availability pair.

### How are internal administration portals and database tools protected from public internet attacks?

All internal administration consoles, deployment tools, and database replication links run over our encrypted private mesh network and are restricted behind our VPN perimeter and IP allowlists. Any unauthenticated request from the public internet to an internal command endpoint is rejected at the edge with `HTTP 403 Forbidden`—never exposing a login prompt to credential-stuffing bots.

### Does this multi-node high-availability cloud cost extra, or is it included in your flat-rate plans?

It is included in our flat-rate plans: Core Cloud is $99/mo, and Core Cloud + Management is $199/mo (which also includes 1 full hour of human engineering/content updates each month plus our Client Operations Portal, Visual Pin Board, Leads CRM, 1 SmarterMail Enterprise mailbox account with additional accounts at $6–$18/mo, and complimentary HijackRadar domain & DNS monitoring).
